The BJP maintains that it is against FDI in retail. The principal Opposition party, keeping in mind its base among retailers, also said it will stop FDI in retail once it comes to power.

However, in a subtle indication of a change in view, the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, on Thursday asked traders not to be scared of global challenges in trade.

Addressing an All India Traders Convention, organised by the Confederation of All India Traders here, Modi asked traders to face the challenges posed by competition from multinationals and corporate brands.

“We don’t have to be scared of global challenges in trade. Let us take them as opportunities. If they go 10 steps ahead, let’s go 15. Bhaagne ka plan na kare, bhidne ka plan kare (Do not try to run away, face it),” Modi said.

Though a section of the party was sceptical about taking a stern stand against FDI in retail, most of party leaders were in favour of opposing the measure in Parliament. This is the first time a senior BJP leader is taking a different position and asking traders to face the challenges from global brands.

Modi also urged traders to adapt to technological variations in ensuring the effective trading of goods and services. He wanted them to boost online trading and ensure good delivery systems.

Later, addressing another function organised by chartered accountants affiliated to the Sangh Parivar, Modi said corruption can be tackled easily by a wilful Government. “If the person at the top cannot be pressurised, things can be improved,” he said.
