The Mumbai-based offshore oilfield service company Great Offshore Ltd changed its name to GOL Offshore Ltd. The company on Friday informed stock exchanges that the name change has been approved by the Registrar of Companies.
According to shipping circles, Great Offshore, which is now controlled by Bharati Shipyard, has decided to drop “Great” from the name to avoid confusion while bidding for offshore contracts. There are two other companies starting their name with great — Great Ship Ltd and Great Energy Ltd — that are operating in the same field. Interestingly, Great Offshore and Great Ship inherited their name from Great Eastern Shipping, India’s largest private shipping company. While Great Ship is part of the Great Eastern Shipping Company, Great Offshore was originally promoted by the same company. Great Energy is the offshore service company floated by Vijay Sheth, after he lost control of Great Offshore.
Great Offshore was originally known as Great Attwood, a joint venture between Great Eastern Shipping and Atwood Oceancis, set up in 1983. In 1993, it became a subsidiary of Great Eastern Shipping and subsequently merged with the company. In 2005, the offshore business was hived off as a separate company — Great Offshore Ltd.
