Amazon India has added two more fulfilment centres in Tamil Nadu, one each in Chennai and Coimbatore, ahead of the spurt in online sales during the festival season.
Fulfilment centres are modern warehouse spaces where Amazon receives goods from sellers, stores, re-packs and despatches goods to online buyers. Amazon has added about 900,000 cubic feet of storage space with these two centres.
India capacity It has over 27 such fulfilment centres across 10 States, with a total of 7.5 million cubic feet of storage capacity.
Akhil Saxena, Vice-President (India Customer Fulfillment), Amazon India, told media persons that the year-end festival season represents the peak period for online sales, with the last three months of the year accounting for more sales than the previous nine months.
Since its launch in India in 2013 with books, movies and DVDs from 100 sellers, the online marketplace now offer over 8 crore products across 100 categories from over 1.20 lakh sellers.
Expecting a feast While declining to share specific numbers on sales value and volume, he said this year will be the biggest Diwali ever. Online sales in 2015 were four times that in the previous year.
Adding fulfilment centres and downstream despatch facilities helps it reach customers faster. It has over 14 lakh products that it can deliver the next day. Home electronics, fashion products, apparels and FMCG are among the top online purchases, he said.
