The Andhra Pradesh government and a US company Alphabet’s X research division are joining hands in the implementation of the ambitious AP FiberNet project, according to a press release.

State IT Minister Nara Lokesh, currently on a visit to the US, visited the company in Mountain View and discussed the details of the project with the company’s executives.

A technology — free space optical communications — would be provided by the X research division of the US company to deliver high-speed and high-capacity broadband connectivity over long distances. There is no need to lay optical fibre cables or string cables along poles for the purpose. It can deliver up to 20 Gbps.

The AP FiberNet project envisages providing connectivity to 12 million households and thousands of businesses in the State, adds the release.
