With India and China signing an audio-visual co-production agreement on Thursday, the two countries have agreed to establish a joint working group to facilitate and come up with a concrete co-operation framework for the film sector.

This decision was taken at the meeting between Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and his Chinese counterpart, Cai Fuchao, Minister for State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television on Thursday.

This group will meet on the sidelines of IFFI 2014 in Goa where China will be the key participant.

“Both the Ministers also agreed that the proposed meeting would be an important step towards identifying key deliverables and a common roadmap to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas related to films and audio-visual production,” the Ministry said in a statement.

During the discussions, Javadekar emphasised that steps needed to be taken to include television as a component of the co-production agreement and that the media units of the film wing, which includes National Film Development Corporation, Films Division and Children Film Society of India, could consider an institutional mechanism of cooperation to be facilitated by an appropriate body in China.

In recent times, Indian movies like Dhoom-3 and 3 Idiots have had Chinese releases.

Some of the initiatives that the two countries will take post the inking of the agreement include public-private partnership in animation sector, and import of Indian films into China.
