The Press Council of India chairperson Justice Markandey Katju today said that the only solution to the Kashmir problem is reunification of India and Pakistan under a strong and “modern-minded” government which will not tolerate bigotry.
“The cause of the Kashmir problem is the partition of India on a totally bogus basis — the two nation theory, that Hindus and Muslims are separate nations....I don’t recognise Pakistan as a legitimate country because the whole basis is the two nation theory and I don’t accept the two nation theory,” he said.
“Therefore the one and only solution to the Kashmir problem or the militancy problem in Pakistan is the reunification of India and Pakistan under a strong, central, secular, modern-minded government which just doesn’t tolerate bigotry,” he said and added that such a government would deal with fanaticism with an iron hand.
Addressing a seminar organised by the South Asia Media Commission here, he said that the two nation theory was encouraged by the British post 1857 to create rift between Hindus and Muslims.
“Many of my Pakistan friends, they agree now that what nonsense this two nation theory is....the entire ploy was by the English and you people are a bunch of idiots,” Katju said.

I totally agree with your positive thoughts on this matter. Lets
assume that this happens in next 10 year time frame. Believe me, we as
a one country will be a stronger than china. Pakistan today import
technology from rest of the world. India is heavily spending money on
weapons to kill each other. India imports more than 10 Billion
dollar/year of military equipment just to defend itself. So in last 10
years India has spend more than 100 billion dollar on warfare itself.
We are spending huge money on nuclear weapons. poor people of both
the countries are getting ignored. There is absolutely no focus on
them due to enmity between 2 nations. Lets unite, and rise above
personal or factional interests to achieve this goal.
Mr. Justice Katju is quite wrong in suggesting that India gets the badlands of NWFP and FATA with its turbulent and uncontrollable tribes and their fanatic fundamentalism. It is likely that exactly the reverse ie splitting up, could be more likely in both the countries. Kashmir is not worth that cost. If the majority of the valley Kashmiris want to be separate or even join Pakistan, then let them, and keep the Jammu and Ladakh areas. We would end up dealing with the cross-border tribes who gave a bloody nose to the Mughals, the British, the Pakistanis, the Russians and now the Americans.
For the sake of the people of both the countries it is good idea.
Politics and Politicians of both the countries will accept it? At
present there is no such leadership in both the countries. But one
day Mahatma Gandhi was also against PARTITION. PAST IS PAST. But the
suggestion given by The Press Council of India chairperson Justice
Markandey Katju is the ultimate solution to KASHMIR ISSUE and
militancy in Pakistan. No doubt it was British Plan but now we are on
our own feet. We can well understand what is good for our coming
generation. When we can start people to people contact, rail, bus
services and encourage goodwill measures, why we should not delete the
boundary line between the people of both the countries. So, we have
to forget the past and have to forward first step in this direction.
The first step will be a great achievement whether it is takan by
Pakistan or India.
justice Katju must understand that in both the country's majority of
the peoples are in favour of present position.on top of that religious
fanatics are the major obstacle of unification.justice Katju is a
straight forward man at the time emotional too.his emotional ,
nostalgic and philosophical ideas ,the idea which is shared by a vast
sizable people of this sub continent because basically we share same
culture same language look similar, carry same genetic structure but
finally comes the political leaders of both the nations who are in
power are corrupt by all means,so they'll ever or never to unite.the
leaders of both the countries do not want to annoy western powers
from whom we purchase arms and ammunitions through different agents
who mint money by bribing the leaders of the different political
parties(not only the party in power). If we unite, we'll be most
powerful country in the world.our best brains are working in developed
countries.even for our own interest we can't unite
Wow! At last someone like Justice Markandey Katju understood India!
Wonderful analysis! Our generation desperately need this reunification!
I am just wondering how Katju made it to SC.
Such an idealistic statement.....the reality perhaps is opposite. To suggest that Kashmir issue
will get resolved by reunification is naive at best and irresponsible at worst. We do not need
to take on Pakistan's troubles, its fanaticism and its dangerous borders .....we have our own
provlems and we should focus on those.
Yea, Kashmir issue can be resolved by reunification if India adopts the
name of Pakistan, its flag, national anthem and ideology. Better it
happen with peace rather than ensuring it forcefully.
