Political mudslinging in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh was at a high with the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah “terrorists”.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav made more insinuations against the Prime Minister, talking about “asses from Gujarat” at a poll rally.

Addressing a public rally at Rae Bareli, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister pointed to a Gujarat tourism advertisement where Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan is seen inviting tourists to visit the Wild Ass Sanctuary located in Rann of Kutch in that State.

“You may have seen an ad on TV sometimes. The ad is about an ass. I would appeal to the biggest superstar of this century to stop promoting asses from Gujarat, ”Akhilesh Yadav said.

Tell me, what will happen if asses keep getting promoted? ... I don’t know who supplies information to the Prime Minister. Once he talked about giving electricity to a village in Uttar Pradesh where power supply had reached years ago. When some people open their mouth, they only talk nonsense,” said Akhilesh Yadav.

‘Creating fear’

While Akhilesh was using metaphors to attack the Prime Minister, one of his party members went a step further. Rajendra Chowdhary, a senior SP Minister, compared the Prime Minister and the BJP chief to “terrorists”.

“Both of them want to create an environment of fear in the State for votes. They (Modi and Shah) are terrorists. They are creating terror in our democracy,” Rajendra Chaudhary said at a press conference. He said “BJP has nothing” to say about its work and therefore its leaders are making “wild allegations“.

“The BJP knows it is losing the UP polls and it will perform worse than even in Bihar,” said Chowdhury, who is also a Minister in the Akhilesh Yadav Cabinet.

The BJP reacted sharply to the “intemperate language” of the SP leader. “It is their (SP’s) frustration and people of Uttar Pradesh will punish them for such intemperate language against the PM,” said BJP Vice-President and party’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge Om Mathur.
