The commercial launch of Amrita Insulin Pump, designed and developed by researchers in the three Amrita campuses at Amritapuri, Coimbatore and Kochi, is expected soon.
“Negotiations are in an advanced stage with an industry partner for production and potential commercialisation of this automated pump, which was recently awarded a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office,” a spokesperson of Amrita University in Coimbatore told BusinessLine .
Stating the development of the pump was made possible through financial support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and seamless integration of experts in the three Amrita campuses, the spokesperson said the pump will have features not found in other designs.
Insulin pumps are normally expensive, costing around ₹2.5 lakh, but at Amrita, we have worked to develop a less expensive pump, the spokesperson added.
Mechanical engineers, electronics engineers, endocrinologists, biochemists, computer scientists and those familiar with regulatory aspects of biomedical devices are said to have been involved in developing the prototype of the pump for close to four years.
