Gujarat votes

The second and final phase of elections to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held today. The last phase will see voting for 93 Assembly seats across 14 districts in north and central Gujarat. The first phase, held on December 9, covered 89 seats. Canvassing saw charges flying thick and fast with the top brass of the BJP and the Congress launching no holds barred attacks against each other. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded the campaign for the ruling party and president of Congress Rahul Gandhi helmed the stumping for his outfit.

Aadhaar petitions

A five-judge Constitution Bench will hear pleas seeking interim relief against the Centre's decision on linking Aadhaar with various government schemes.The right to choice of existing Aadhaar holders who do not want to link their bank accounts may also come up for a decision. Some petitioners in the top court have termed the linking of the Unique Identification Authority of India number with bank accounts and mobile numbers as “illegal and unconstitutional“.

All-party meet ahead of Parliament session

The Government will hold an all-party meeting on Thursday, a day before the Winter session of Parliament opens. The Opposition parties will get together to discuss their strategy before the government's all-party. The Winter session usually begins mid-November and ends before December 25.

European Union summit in Brussels

European Union leaders are set to meet in Brussels on Thursday and Friday. On Day 1, the leaders, together with Britain, will discuss reforming the bloc's asylum system. The leaders will also have a signing ceremony to mark the launch of a landmark pact, PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation), on boosting military cooperation. The second day, the focus will be on Brexit. The EU is likely to toughen their conditions after the UK cast doubt on whether a deal on divorce terms is binding.

Indian Olympic Association chief

Narinder Batra, International Hockey Federation chief, is all set to be elected unopposed as Indian Olympic Association president. In a surprise move, top tennis official Anil Khanna withdrew his nomination papers on December 7, well after the December 3 deadline for the withdrawal of nomination papers. The AGM on Thursday will elect a new set of office bearers for the country's apex sports body.
