The IAS Association in Kerala has withdrawn its call to officers to apply for mass leave on Monday against what it described as a witch hunt directed against members by the Director of Vigilance.

The call was withdrawn hastily after the intervention of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who made it clear to the officers that the government had taken a serious view of the entire episode.

Those who control the administration should not bring discredit to it, the Chief Minister said. The government would not countenance any misadventures to weaken it, he warned them.

“This is not the first time that IAS cadre have come under the scanner of investigators. An emotional outburst is understandable, but it should not cross the limits of prudence and reason.”

A delegation led by the state Chief Secretary met the Chief Minister in the morning. It reasoned that the protest was not directed against the government, but the Vigilance Director.

Jacob Thomas, Vigilance Director, had recently created a furore by proceeding against a few of the senior-most officers in the state, including KM Abraham, Paul Antony and Tome Jose, for suspected involvement in a variety of cases.
