Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said Monday night’s murder of a BJP activist in Kannur was executed to avenge the killing of a CPI(M) activist in the neighbourhood only hours earlier.

Vijayan said this in response to an adjournment motion on the violence, sought to be moved by the Opposition in the State Assembly this morning.

He said CPI(M) activist Dhanaraj was hacked to death by a 10-member gang of BJP cadre in the courtyard of his house.

This, in turn, led to the murder of local BJP functionary Ramachandran, he added, without specifying who the suspected killers were.

The police have launched separate investigations into the two incidents, which are progressing well.

The killings had triggered what the Chief Minister described as an unfortunate chain of incidents of violence and arson in Kannur. But the situation has been brought control now.

K Muraleedharan of the Congress piloted the adjournment motion. He alleged that the police had reacted to the violent incidents as though it had lost its will-power and self-confidence.

He also pointed out to the paradox in which ruling parties at the Centre and the State were involved in violent incidents.

But the Chief Minister in his reply denied that law and order had deteriorated in the state after the Left Front government assumed power a month ago.
