The Karnataka government today banned with immediate effect nylon threads commonly known as ‘Chinese dor’ or ‘Chinese manja’ used for kite flying, saying it causes grievous injuries to birds, animals as well as human beings.
“Ban has been imposed on procuring, stocking, sale and use of nylon thread commonly know as Chinese Dor or Chinese Manja or other synthetic (Non-bio-degradable) threads coasted with glass or other harmful substances used for kite flying or other purposes likely to cause grievous injury and inconvenience to birds, animals as well as human beings,” an official release said.
The ban is with immediate effect in the interest of public, it said.
Ecologists and bird watchers have been demanding the ban citing its negative effects on the environment, birds and animals.
Requesting the public to cooperate with the government and the law enforcement authorities, the release said the threads also adversely affect soil, water, cattle and damage the environment.
Those violating ban can be booked under various Acts like Karnataka forest, wild life (protection) and environment (protection) Acts.
