The Karnataka Startup Cell in KBITS in association with IKP Knowledge Park has launched the first call for proposals under the Grand Challenges – Karnataka initiative of the Karnataka Government.

Karnataka Minister for IT and BT, Priyank Kharge said, “Bengaluru is a laboratory for innovations. Sharing and transferring these innovations through a public private partnership can help solve many of the issues facing the State.”

He further added “We plan to launch calls around five priority areas, and this is the First Call for Proposals. We hope that at the end of two years we will have the required system which will allow the government and civil society to receive consistent, reliable and real time data of the water discharge on which policy interventions can be designed.”

One of the Goals of the Karnataka Startup Policy 15-20 is ‘to facilitate generation of at least 25 Innovative Technology solutions with a social impact in sectors like Health care, Food Security, Clean environment and Education for all etc.’

The State intends to use the vibrant startup environment to drive innovation through use of technology to find workable and scalable solutions to challenges faced by it. The State will use the model of Grand challenges to focus attention and effort on specific problems.

Each year challenges would be posed in 5 identified areas and solutions selected through a rigorous selection process shall be awarded an initial grant and a follow on funding for implementation of a pilot project at an appropriate scale. The winners will also automatically qualify for incubation space in the incubators supported by the State Government as per the prevalent norms

The Call for Proposals will remain open until September 30, 2016. Interested applicants should register on the program’s website (http://startup.karnataka.gov.in/funding#grand-challenge-fund) and apply via an online form.

Karnataka Principal Secretary, IT & BT, V Manjula said, “KBITS has launched many schemes for promoting Start-ups in the state for e.g. the New Age Incubation Network (NAIN) across various academic institutions, promotion of TBIs, providing Idea2PoC funding, and creating incubation infrastructure through PPP.”

“Grand Challenges – Karnataka is in continuation of the above where the State intends to use the vibrant startup environment to drive innovation through use of technology to find workable and scalable solutions to challenges faced by it,” she added.
