On a day when the Election Commission instructed political parties to follow the Supreme Court order prohibiting the use of religion while canvassing for votes, the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Keshav Prasad Maurya declared that his party would build a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya if it gets a majority in the Assembly polls.

“Ram Mandir is a subject of faith. It is not going to be built in two months. The temple will be constructed after the elections. BJP will come to power with a full majority,” Maurya told reporters in Delhi on Tuesday.

He also hit out at Akhilesh Yadav, saying the UP Chief Minister is neither with Backward Classes nor Dalits, but “he only betrays”. His remark came after Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that no fresh caste certificates are issued to those belonging to 17 Other Backward Classes (OBC) groups. Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to all parties, the Election Commission said “due note” should be taken of the directions in the judgement of the Supreme Court of January 2 this year on a case relating to “seeking votes in the name of religion, caste etc”.
