The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly commenced here on Monday with the House adopting condolence motions over the Pushkaram tragedy and incidents of suicide pressing for Special Category Status for the State.

The day began amidst noisy scenes with the treasury benches and Opposition trading charges, leading to disorder in the House.

Expressing anguish at the stampede and consequent death of 27 persons at the Godavari Pushkaram on July 13 in Rajahmundry, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu moved a condolence motion. He narrated how the government managed to control the situation after the unfortunate incident.

Blaming Naidu for the incident, opposition leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of the YSR Congress said had the Chief Minister not gone to the bathing ghat that day, the incident would never have occurred.

As he continued to speak, there were loud protests and Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao wanted Jagan to withdraw some of his comments.

The ruling party members contended that this was supposed to be a condolence message and Jagan was seeking to politicise the whole issue on a tragic incident.

When another resolution on Special Category Status was taken up, Jagan alleged that Naidu was responsible for the suicides over the issue.

He further asked the CM to direct his MPs to step aside as Union Ministers in the Modi government, for their failure to ensure special status for the State.
