Dr Shivarama Karantha Pilikula Nisargadhama in Mangaluru – which houses a biological park, a heritage village and a science centre – will set up a Centre for Rainwater Harvesting.

In an informal chat with presspersons on the sidelines of the inauguration of an interpretation centre at the biological park at Pilikula in Mangaluru taluk on Wednesday, Jayaprakash Bhandary, Executive Director of Pilikula Nisargadhama, said that the recent meeting of the governing council has taken a decision to set up a centre for rainwater harvesting at Pilikula.

It will have all the models of rainwater harvesting, and will serve as a demonstration unit also. Finer details of the project are being worked out, he said.

Apart from this, there are also plans to implement water harvesting techniques in the buildings in Nisargadhama premises, he said.

Established in 1996, Nisargadhama has emerged as a major tourist attraction in Dakshina Kannada district. The six-acre man-made lake in Nisargadhama is a good example for water harvesting in the region, he said.

Earlier in the day, B Ramanatha Rai, Karnataka Forest Minister, inaugurated the interpretation centre at the biological park of the Nisargadhama.

Bhandary said that the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd has set up the interpretation centre at a cost of ₹28 lakh under its corporate social responsibility programme.

Pilikula Nisargadhama project covers an area of around 360 acres at Pilikula in Mangaluru. This includes 150 acres of land in biological park.
