According to Arnab Roy, Principal Secretary, State Environment Department, for nine months a year, slums in Darjeeling which are not connected to normal water supply, will get water for drinking and washing purposes.
The funding is being provided by Global Climate Facility Funding. This is the first time a rainwater harvesting project on such a big scale is being implemented in the state, a release issued by CII said quoting the bureaucrat.
Roy was speaking during at a conference on sustainable waste management organised by the CII,.
The Municipal Engineering Directorate is executing the project and the process for submission of tenders has already begun.
With land becoming increasingly scarce, urban local bodies should look towards recycling, reduction and segregation of wastes. It also gives a huge business opportunity for industry as well, he said.
