In the first tie-up of its kind in the corporate world, BMC Software India has tied up with a cab services operator Wings Travels to deploy cabs driven by women to ferry women employees, and pregnant women on a priority basis, to and from the workplace.

The new initiative will kick off with five cabs dedicated to BMC in Pune, and will in time be rolled out across the four cities in which the company has operations in India. The cabs will be tracked by GPRS, will be fitted with a voice activated panic switch and also have a portable gel-based fire extinguisher of board.

The move follows the recent launch by Wings Travels of its Sakhi initiative under which it currently has a 10-strong fleet of cabs with women drivers.

“The partnership with Wings Sakhi gives us an opportunity to cater to our women employees in a special way at an important phase of their lives, that is during their pregnancy,” Tarun Sharma CEO, BMC Software India and Chief Customer Officer, APJ said. The company plans to expand the service to Bangalore soon.

Elaborating on the voice activated panic switch, Arun Kharat, MD, Wings Travels, said that the switch will be activated by a scream or shriek and flash a picture of the cab interior to a 24x7 central monitoring cell. The deployment team at the call centre will then mobilise help.

In his experience, women drivers have a high attrition rate and a corporate tie-up of this nature will help bring financial viability to the initiative he added.
