The MP Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, which began India’s first astronomical shows in full-dome format in 1962, has decided install a new projection system that would make the viewing experience vibrant.
Planetarium Director (Research & Academics) Debiprasad Duari told Business Line on Tuesday it has signed an agreement with Carl Zeiss for installing a technologically advanced projector with eight digital back-ups.
“This is a hybrid system with digital aids that would enhance the viewing experience manyfold,” Duari said.
Carl Zeiss, the German optical-mechanical and digital planetarium projector manufacturer, will install the new system through its local partner Orbit Animate.
According to people involved in the deal, the new system would cost around Rs 20 crore. The new system would be fully operational within the next 12 to 14 months. The planetarium has 688 seats and it has been economically viable with 40-minute shows and the 52-year-old projection system. Duari, however, said live commentary along with the show would continue after the new shows were formatted with the help of the new equipment.
It also plans to introduce a new exhibition gallery.
