The cities of Berlin and Hamburg on Tuesday said they would proceed with bids to host the summer Olympic Games in 2024 or 2028.

At a meeting, the Berlin council prepared answers to 13 questions from the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) which must be submitted by Sunday.

“We have designed an extensive catalogue. It is important that the application has a broad basis of support from the population,” Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit said at a press conference. Wowereit also said he would leave his position on December 11.

Berlin faces competition from Hamburg, which also confirmed its intention to bid, to be the German candidate city for the Olympics.

“A working group has been very intense and very busy,” a Hamburg council spokesman said. “They would not have done this if they were not of the opinion they could impress the DOSB and the International Olympic Commitee.” The cities will present their concepts to the DOSB on September 1, with the decision on the bid being made December 6.
