The badminton court is set to become a battleground for film stars in the inaugural season of India’s first celebrity badminton league, set to kick off in Chennai on September 18 – with participation from the four southern film industries.
Nearly 80 per cent of celebrities play the sport, said L Hemachandran, Founder and CEO, Celebrity Badminton League Pvt Ltd. The start-up company has attracted investment of ₹3.30 crore from JP Academy Pvt Ltd for a 33 per cent stake, he told newspersons. Chennai Rockers (franchisee is CR Venkatesh), Kerala Royals (Ranjit Karunakaran), Karnataka Alps (Justin and co-owned by Sanghavi) and Tollywood Thunders (Krishnathma Modigapalli) are the four teams.
Each franchisee has made an investment of around ₹2 crore that includes a franchisee fee, celebrity costs, and event management expenses. The total cost of hosting the league will be around ₹15 crore, he said.
The format allows each team owner to collect 15 per cent from central revenue generated by CBL, apart from acquiring individual team sponsorships. The team owner will in turn bear the franchisee fee, local promotion cost, event management, logistics and money charged by celebrities, he said.
