What happens when teams from eight business schools compete in an investment research challenge?

Going by what was witnessed at the South Zone finals of the CFA Institute Research Challenge India, it is a lot of financial analysis and interesting insights. The teams presented their research recommendation on the subject company – Sun TV Networks. Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore, represented by Soumya Gupta, Pratik Jaipuriar, Saakshi Mahajan, Siddharth Agarwal, and Abhishek Agarwal emerged the winner.

Other finalists from South India included teams from IIM-Kozhikode; IIM-Trichy; Bharathidasan Insititute of Management, Trichy; Indian School of Business, Hyderabad; TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal; Department of Management Studies, IIT-Madras; and the Institute of Financial Management and Research, Chennai.

The competition was judged by K. Ramakrishnan, Executive Director at Spark Capital Advisors; M. Ramprasad, Chairman and Co-founder, MAPE Advisory Group; and Kishor Bagri, Senior Vice-President, Portfolio Manager, ING Investment Management.

A total of 43 business schools across five zones participated. The winner from each zone will compete at the national level, and the winner from there will represent India in the Asia-Pacific regional challenge. Finals for four zones have been conducted so far.

The competition is organised by the Indian Association of Investment Professionals and supported by National Stock Exchange, Bloomberg and FitchLearning. CFA Institute Research Challenge is considered as “the investment Olympics” for university students. Over 10,000 students have participated in this annual event since its launch in 2006.  The IRC aims to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. This year, over 3,500 students from 775 universities worldwide will participate in the local rounds of the competition.
