The land acquisition process for ArcelorMittal's proposed Rs 42,000-crore greenfield integrated steel plant in Jharkhand has already begun, a senior State Government official said here today.

The land registration for the proposed steel plant of ArcelorMittal has begun in Kasmar Petrawar in Bokaro district since December last, the Jharkhand Industry Secretary, Mr A.P. Singh, said.

He was here to take part in the inauguration of Hi-Tech Design Lab and foundation stone laying ceremony of the Hi-Tech Testing Lab building.

The land acquisition process had been tardy due to Panchayat election and the National Games that concluded last month but the process has now gained momentum, Mr Singh said on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony.

Asked how many of acres have been registered so far, the Industry Secretary said it was below 50 acres.

Mr Singh said the construction work would not begin till the steel major acquired at least 500 acres as 500 to 550 acres were required even for a one-million-tonne capacity steel plant. ArcelorMittal has proposed to set up a 10-million-tonne capacity steel plant in Jharkhand.

ArcelorMittal requires 2,200 acres to start work for the first phase, he said.

The company had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Jharkhand Government for the proposed steel plant in October 2005.
