Balaji Telefilms Ltd is looking to collaborate with various domestic and international players to generate content for television, media and movies.

The company said it sees big potential in the movie business as multiplexes spawn across the country.

“The plan is to become a powerhouse which can generate content for all genres of media. We have a lot of inherent strengths which we will be cashing in on,” Sameer Nair, the newly appointed CEO of Balaji Telefilms, told BusinessLine .

The company reported a net loss of ₹17.19 crore last fiscal against a net profit of ₹14.58 crore in the year before. Its revenue stood at ₹407.46 crore.

Nair has been associated with Balaji since 2000 when he was the CEO of Star TV. He was instrumental in launching the popular K-series on Star Plus. Balaji has produced more than 15,000 hours of content, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, since its inception in 1994. It is promoted by Shobha and Ekta Kapoor.

While the company will continue its focus on general entertainment channel (GEC), it will also broaden its canvas with films, Nair said. “We have an open door policy. While GEC will continue to be our mainstay, we are also looking to make it big with movies.” The pipeline will include small, medium and high budget films for the next couple of years, he added.

According to an investor presentation, Balaji’s content portfolio comprises more than 25 films. Balaji Motion Pictures Ltd (BMPL), the films division, recently produced Ek Villain .

Nair added the television revenues are expected to expand owing to demand from satellite channels for premium television serials.

He, however, said company has no plans to enter the broadcast category.
