Kemppi Oy, a Finnish company that manufactures welding equipment, has set up an assembly plant in Chennai – the company's first manufacturing unit outside Finland. Over the next two years, it will invest Rs 50 crore here, the company's Managing Director, Mr Arvind Vasu, told a press conference here today. Unlike companies such as ESAB and Lincoln Electric, Kemppi does not produce welding consumables, such as electrodes. Kemppi also produces only equipment that are “inverter based” – these equipment store their own power. In the year beginning April 2011, Kemppi will produce 3,000 units in Chennai – whose value will be worth about Rs 10 crore. But this will be less than a fourth of the company's sales because Kemppi will also import equipment from Finland.
