Online travel services provider Cleartrip, which clocked ₹800 crore in revenue for FY 2015, expects to generate 15-20 per cent of its revenue from its recently launched vertical — Activities, in FY 2017.

Available on the Cleartrip mobile app across iOS, Android and Windows, Activities is a set of 3,500 handpicked collection of experiences and things to do in 35 cities pan-India, like Segway tours, go-karting, yachting, night treks, photography trails, culinary classes, food walks and so on.

The experiences are priced between ₹200 and ₹3,000. “Activities is not just meant exclusively for travellers to other cities but also for the local market to engage in. For instance, if you are a Bengalurean, you could opt to go on a tour of a vineyard on the outskirts of the city, Subramanya Sharma, Chief Marketing Officer, Cleartrip told BusinessLine .

The new vertical, which was launched in mid-August, has garnered a huge following — in the last two weeks alone, 1.2 million of Cleartrip’s monthly active user base of three million people used Activities.

From 2,500 experiences in 25 cities in August, Activities now offers 3,500 experiences in 35 cities across the country.

Air, hotel bookings

Cleartrip plans to add another 1,000 experiences and expand its footprint to 100 cities over the next 60 days.

Air bookings on Cleartrip contributes to 65 per cent of the company’s revenue and hotel bookings contribute to 35 per cent, at present.

“Activities is a strategic bet for us, which will contribute to 15-20 per cent of our revenue in FY 2017. Travellers are increasingly opting to create their own travel itineraries and do not want to book packages anymore. Therefore, since we do not offer packages on Cleartrip, it made tremendous business sense to offer Activities instead,” added Sharma.

An interesting point to note is that 75 per cent of the usage of Activities has been from locals residing in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai.

While theme park visits, micro-light flying and go-karting are the most popular experiences for locals in Bengaluru; Bollywood tours and Segway rides are very popular among Mumbaikars; culinary classes and skills workshops are popular in Delhi.

“We are targeting 5,000 transactions a day from Activities by March 2016 and 10,000 transactions a day in FY 2017,” said Sharma.

The Cleartrip mobile app has been downloaded by eight million users to date.
