The legendary Indian Motorcycle, the oldest US brand in motorcycles, will vroom into more cities in India with the rapid expansion of its distribution network over the next couple of months.

The growth in the market for luxury motorcycles, fuelled by enthusiasts looking to make a statement with something distinctive and different, has made India an attractive destination for premium motorcycles.

And when it comes to being distinctive there is not much more than the Indian Motorcycle that buyers can look for. With bikes powered by engines of 1200 cc and more and a price list that starts from about ₹12 lakh and goes on to over ₹42 lakh, these are not for the average bike lover.

Pankaj Dubey, Managing Director, Polaris India, which is introducing the Indian Motorcycle to the markets here, told media persons at the launch of the company’s sales outlet in Chennai that over the next two months, the motorcycles will be available in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Mumbai. The Chennai outlet is the third, after opening the first in Delhi last year and the second in Bangalore a couple of months ago.

Polaris India, a subsidiary of Polaris Industries Inc of the US which owns Indian Motorcycle, has launched all the six models beginning with the entry level Indian Scout and going up the Roadmaster in the markets here. All these are imported as fully built units.

In three to five years the company may consider an assembling unit depending on the growth of the market, he said.

The market size of motorcycles in the 1200-cc segment and bigger is estimated at about a 1,000 units a year and is growing rapidly.

According to industry estimates, the superbike category, which includes bikes from 750 cc onwards, is estimated at about 8,000 units a year which is a multi-fold growth when compared with 100 units a year less than a decade back, Dubey said.

In Chennai, Indian Motorcycle outlet is operated by JMB Motor which will bring the entire range. A service facility will open next week.
