NTPC has begun transporting fly ash through inland waterways as a pilot project from NTPC Kahalgaon unit to Pandu, Assam for use in cement manufacturing.

“For this pilot project, first mile activity of bagging and loading of fly ash into barges will be done by NTPC and the cost of transportation will be taken care by the Inland Waterways Authority of India and Star Cement,” an NTPC statement said.

NTPC said that fly ash is being regularly transported in 40 kg bags through railway wagons to the cement plants located in northeastern states from NTPC Kahalgaon.

“There is a huge demand for fly ash in this region, but due to limitations of availability of railway rakes and route congestion, only 15-22 rakes per month are being dispatched from NTPC Kahalgaon plant as against the potential for about 30 rakes per month,” the statement said.

Waterway route seeks to improve the utilisation of fly ash. The first load of fly ash has been loaded by NTPC Kahalgaon after IWAI moved its barge vessel from Kolkata to Kahalgaon and two barge vessels of 1,000 tonne capacity each had reached Kahalgaon on August 17. The vessels will go to Pandu port through the national waterways and Indo-Bangla route, the statement added.
