Tata Power said that the company in consortium with SN Power Norway has bagged the “Dugar Hydro Electric Project” in Chenab Valley, Himachal Pradesh.

The 236-MW project is estimated to cost about Rs 2,300 crore.

Tata Power and SN Power entered into an exclusive partnership in 2009 to develop hydropower projects in India and Nepal.

The Dugar project will be developed by a special purpose vehicle and the pre-implementation agreement will be signed with the Directorate of Energy, Himachal Pradesh. A detailed exploration and design study will be undertaken to finalise implementation. Tata Power said the project across the river Chandrabhaga (Chenab) is the last in cascade and would primarily feed the Northern grid. The dam height would be 93 metre with an underground cavern type powerhouse at its base.

Mr Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power, said, “This project further contributes to our clean fuel portfolio and reinforces our sustainability agenda. Our association with SN Power has been fruitful and rewarding and is in line with our growth strategy to build global relationships and partnerships with the organisations which are leading performers in their field.”

Mr Tor Stokke, SN Power's Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our partnership with Tata Power allows us to combine our extensive hydropower competence while drawing on our common approach to social and environmental sustainability and ethical business conduct.”

Tata Power said Himachal Pradesh has abundant hydro resources with a potential of about 23,000 MW.

About 6,672 MW had been harnessed so far by the Central and State governments, private players and joint venture companies.

The Tata Power-SN Power consortium is also working on developing the 880 MW Tamakoshi 3 Project in Nepal for which they have an exploratory licence.

Tata Power has over 3,000 MW through hydro, thermal, solar and wind energy with an additional 5,500 MW in construction.

It currently has 447 MW of operational hydro power in Maharashtra, which feeds power to Mumbai and about 114 MW from Dagachhu Hydro Project under construction in Bhutan in joint venture with Druk Green Power Company, Bhutan.
