The Chief Ministers of the BJP-ruled States will meet here on Saturday to discuss the economic situation of the country.

According to the principal opposition party, the economy is caught between crony capitalism and the “return of license and quota raj”.

The party wants to assess the impact of the slowdown in the BJP-ruled States. The meeting would also “exchange” the steps taken by the NDA Governments to meet the challenges of the slowdown, particularly in employment generation, managing price rise and developmental measures.

Former Finance Minister and the convenor of the policy formulation group of the BJP Yashwant Sinha said the effort is not to criticise the UPA Government’s economic policies.

“The whole world is criticising the UPA,” Sinha said, adding that the meeting will provide “positive suggestions” to the country on dealing with the economic situation. He said the meet will focus on the “exchange of best governing practices” in the NDA-ruled States.

Issues like partisan attitude towards non-UPA ruled States, discrimination in distributing funds and delays in clearance of various projects by States would be discussed in the one-day meeting. Sinha added that the UPA government has made a mockery of the federal structure.

“Legislations passed by the state legislatures are kept pending at the Central level at will,” he said.

The BJP has been critical of various economic measures taken by the Centre. It had opposed the move to bring FDI in the retail sector and the introduction of retrospective taxation of overseas transactions involving local assets. The party has also been opposing the Pension Bill.

Sinha said the party will not change its stand on FDI in retail.
