Chennai-based Gemini Communication Ltd has said that it has a contract from “a large telecom operator” to solar-power 1,000 telecom towers in 2012-13.
A back of the envelope calculation shows this would fetch revenues of Rs 60 crore.
In a recent chat with Business Line , Mr Pradhyumna Venkat, CEO- Energy and Utility Business, Gemini Communication, said that powering a telecom tower with diesel genset typically cost Rs 80,000 a month, but with solar the cost could be brought down to Rs 50,000.
He said that 1 lakh towers are today off-grid, which represents the immediate potential to “solarise”.
In addition, there are another 2 lakh towers that can also be powered by sun's energy.
