The Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Ms Jayanthi Natarajan, has said that her Ministry had received complaints against the waste-to-energy plant in Okhla.
The complaints related to the incineration of municipal waste and its likely harmful effects on air quality and health of people in the Sukhdev Vihar/Okhla area due to emissions, she said in the Rajya Sabah on Tuesday.
Ms Natarjan said that as per the information provided by Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), till March 6, 2012, a total of 27,469 tonnes of municipal solid waste had been utilised and 3,250 tonnes of waste was lying in the collection/storage pit in the plant.
The Minister said that DPCC was regularly monitoring the emissions from the stack attached to the plant. Levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and hydrochloric acid mist (HCl) were found to be within the standards, as prescribed in the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000. However, on four occasions out of 10, levels of particulate matter exceeded the standard of 150 mg/Nm3. aditi@thehindu.co.in
