The depression in the Bay of Bengal lay centred about 390 km south-southwest of Chandbali and 280 km south-southeast of Puri in Odisha by Thursday evening.

It is expected to cross the Odisha coast between Puri and Chandbali by Thursday mid-night/early Friday morning. It could intensify into a deep depression before crossing the coast.

Sea surface temperatures of the cities of Machilipatnam, Kakinada, Yarada, Gopalpur, Puri, Haldia, Diamond Harbour are uniformly at 30 deg Celsius. This is way beyond threshold of 27.5 deg Celsius required for storms to breed and sustain. Warm waters generate moisture and help with clouding to sustain storm structure and strength.

The India Met Department has forecast rainfall at most places over coastal Odisha with heavy to very heavy rainfall at others and isolated heavy over interior Odisha during next two days.

It will be isolated to heavy over adjoining Srikakulam and Vijayanagram districts of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh until Friday.

A similar outlook is valid for the coastal districts of Bengal and North-Eastern States until Friday and over the rest of Bengal into Saturday.

Squally winds are likely along and off the coasts and the sea condition will range from ‘rough’ to ‘very rough.’ Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the seas.
