Tea producers and traders who operated through the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association have earned 9.67 per cent more in the first quarter of current calendar compared to the same period of 2015. This has happened because 16 lakh kg more volume was sold despite prices rising by as much as ₹21 a kg, thanks to higher demand in winter months. In all, 12 auctions had been held till March when 1.03 crore kg was sold against 1.19 crore kg in the same period of 2015. This was despite the average prices rising to ₹98.62 a kg from ₹77.83 last year. Consequently, the overall earnings rose to ₹101.58 crore from ₹92.62 crore in January-March 2105. This increase of ₹8.96 crore in the cumulative realisation marked a growth of 9.67 per cent. Although the market trend was better compared to last year, buyers’ tendency to show resistance to high prices was visible in March. This continues in April as well.
