Keventer Agro, which sells pouch milk and ice-creams under its flagship brand Metro Dairy, has launched ‘Keventer milk’ in cardboard cartons.

The company’s ₹150-crore facility at Barasat on the outskirts of Kolkata is operational and has a capacity to process around two lakh litres of milk a day.

Target areas

According to Mayank Jalan, Chairman and Managing Director, Keventer, the Barasat plant will cater to customers in West Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chattisgarh and Bhutan. “Currently, we are sourcing milk from close to 20,000 dairy farmers within a 100-km radius of the plant and are producing around 40,000-50,000 litres of UHT milk a day. We expect to ramp up to full capacity by end-2019 or early 2020,” Jalan told newspersons here on Tuesday.

In terms of volume, UHT (ultra high temperature) milk market in India is pegged at around 15 lakh litres a day and nearly 30 per cent of this is consumed in the eastern States. The market has been growing at over 20 per cent on a year-on-year basis over the last five years.

Keventer is hopeful of earning ₹250 crore worth revenue and garnering 25 per cent of the UHT milk market in the East by 2020.

Apart from dairy and food processing, frozen food and beverages are the other major segment for them. The Metro Dairy brand operates primarily in the Greater Kolkata region. Keventer milk will be available in most of the eastern and North-Eastern States, he said.
