A team from Air India is expected to visit Dublin in the next six-to-eight weeks to take a decision on whether the airline should set up its European hub there.

The visiting Irish Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sports, Mr Leo Varadkar, told newspersons here on Thursday that shifting its European hub to Dublin would offer substantial saving to the airline.

Currently Air India does not have a European hub having recently shut down the hub in Frankfurt. The state-owned airline is said to be considering two European airports including Dublin as a potential hub.

“Dublin is one of the lowest cost airports in Europe. It also enjoys the advantage of offering passengers travelling to the US the chance of completing US immigration facilities in Dublin itself,” the Minister said.

The Minister indicated that Dublin was open to the private airlines from India looking at setting up their hub in Dublin, but added that no meeting was scheduled with either Jet Airways or Kingfisher Airlines representatives during the current visit.

Ireland is also considering granting Indian visitors travelling to the US through Dublin a 72-hour visa on arrival, the Minister added.
