This Durga Puja, the model of any one of the pandals in the city will be selected by German artist Gregor Schneider to be replicated and exhibited across the globe. This will be over and above the exhibition of the artefacts of the Puja pandal of Ekdalia Evergreen Club which is being designed by Mr Schneider himself.
The work of art will be exhibited in Germany and Spain to begin with, Mr Schneider said.
“I will be taking portions of the Ekdalia club pandal and the remains of the idol after it is immersed in water to my hometown and will preserve it in the museum. I also intend to take a model of a suitable Durga Puja pandal in the city to be replicated by the local artists in Germany,” he said at a press meet here on Tuesday.
In Mr Schneider's work titled ‘It's all Rheydt – Kolkata 2011' the pandal architecture of the Ekdalia club is based on the artist's own house in Rheydt, Germany.
“I brought a model of Germany to Kolkata which was built by local artists using locally available materials such as bamboo. Likewise, I will be carrying with me a model of another Durga Puja in Kolkata and replicate it by using German engineering techniques and artists,” he said.
Mr Schneider will go pandal hopping to look out for the best model. “It is an organic process. Durga Puja for me is a ‘public art'. This art will be replicated in Germany with slight modifications,” he said.
