The Confederation of Indian Industry, Puducherry, wants the Centre to set up an Indian Institute of Management in the Union Territory. It also wants manufacturing zones on IT and hardware to be set up.

In a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who was on a day’s trip to Puducherry, the CII delegation urged the Centre to enhance air, rail and road connectivity to Puducherry. It also sought allocation of additional power from the national grid to meet the power shortage in Puducherry.

The team briefed the Prime Minister on its various initiatives, including the Vision 2025 initiative in partnership with the State Government, which CII is taking to develop Puducherry.

The team members included Mr K.S. Shetty, Chairman, CII Puducherry; Mr K Amarnath, Vice-Chairman, CII Puducherry; Mr C.S. Dwivedi and Mr Meenakshi Kumar, Past Chairmen of Puducherry and Mr Sujith Haridas, Regional Director, CII, Southern Region, says a CII press release. Mr Shetty told the Prime Minister that the Vision 2025 document envisages Puducherry to become a ‘Model State’ by 2025.

It has a potential to emerge as an international destination for higher education, wellness, spiritual, and eco-tourism destination and a hub for high-end manufacturing and services industries, duly preserving its environment and heritage.

Mr V. Narayanasamy, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, was also present on the occasion, says the release.
