The Indian Railways moved 82.55 million tonnes (mt) of freight traffic in January, registering a 5.39 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year. The growth rate is better than that in December 2010 and November 2010.
In December 2010, the Railways carried 79.88 mt traffic, registering a 2.11 per cent growth year-on-year. In November 2010, the Railways moved 76.55 MT of goods, registering 5.18 per cent growth year-on-year.
“During January 2011, the revenue earning freight traffic carried by Indian Railways was 82.55 mt, …(against) the actual freight traffic of 78.33 mt carried by the Indian Railways during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.39 per cent,” stated an official release. On a cumulative basis, the Railways have carried 755.97 mt of revenue earning freight traffic during April 2010-January 2011.
