Karnataka is set to adopt a new urban development policy that has been prepared to take care of the State's urban development needs for the next 30 years, according to the Urban Development Minister, Mr S. Suresh Kumar.

Addressing a session of Municipalika, a three-day international conference and an exhibition on good urban governance for safe, healthy, green and smart cities, organised by the Good Governance India Foundation in association with the Union Government, Mr. Kumar said the draft policy would be sent to the Cabinet either this week or the next for approval.

In another development, the US Department of Energy, a participant at the conference, said it will help Bangalore improve its energy efficiency. “The Public Utilities Department of the US is set to hold talks with the Karnataka Energy Department and Bangalore Water Supplies and Sewerage Board regarding energy efficiency,” Mr. Mark Ginsberg, senior executive in the US Department of Energy, told reporters at the sidelines of the conference.

Solar city projects

He said the US Department of Energy was also in the process of collaborating with India in its initiative to launch 37 solar projects in various cities. The Karnataka Government has already announced that Bangalore city is set to get a solar city project. It envisages developing energy-efficient habitats with grid-connected roof-top solar units.

Pointing out that such a project had also been undertaken in the US in 20 cities, Mr. Vatsal Bhat, senior analyst, Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, said the US Energy Department was now trying to pair up some of the proposed solar cities in India with the US solar cities for better collaboration and sharing of best practices.

This would include collaboration at various levels between two solar cities such as partnership between corporation administrations, Universities (academic) and Commerce associations for working towards energy efficiency and conservation.
