The Union Ministry for Human Resources Development has released Rs 409.77 crore to Andhra Pradesh as first instalment of non-recurring grant for setting up 353 new model schools in the educationally backward blocks in the State.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, the amount has been sanctioned to the Andhra Pradesh Secondary Education Society under the Centrally-sponsored programme of “Schemes for setting up of 6,000 model schools at Block level as benchmark of excellence” in the educationally backward blocks of the country.

The State Government will release its share to the AP Secondary Education Society.

The Union HRD Ministry has indicated that the next instalment will be released after the receipt of expenditure statement in respect of grants released and at least 50 per cent of the grants released have been utilised.

The State Government inaugurated works for over 1,067 schools and laid foundation stone for 75 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidhyalaya's and 500 additional high school complexes in different parts of the State last month.

The State Government has planned total expenditure of about Rs. 2,500 crore towards improvement of education and strengthening the infrastructure of existing schools and 20,000 additional classroom.
