Faced with criticism that Arogyasri is benefiting private hospitals, the Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to improve participation of public hospitals in the health insurance scheme.
Addressing the Health Ministers conference here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, said public hospitals performed 22-23 per cent of 1,100 surgeries being done every day under the scheme, with the private hospitals taking care of the remaining demand.
Facing criticism
“We are facing criticism that we are benefiting private sector. But the point is it needs enormous investments to make government hospitals strong enough to take additional burden. We have begun efforts in this direction. We hope to improve participation up to 30 per cent soon,” he said.
About 350 private hospitals were designated to treat Arogyasri patients.
He said the Government found huge shortage for doctors and paramedical staff to man the Government hospitals.
