The Lok Sabha on Thursday voted demands for grants to the tune of over Rs 46 lakh crore for 2011-12 without any discussion for most ministries and departments, completing the second stage of budgetary exercise in the lower house.
The relevant appropriation Bill was also passed after guillotine was applied on the outstanding demands for grants of various ministries and departments.
The outstanding demands were voted and the appropriation Bill was passed soon after the Opposition led by the BJP and Left parties staged a walk out over the issue of alleged bribes for Members of Parliament (MP) votes in 2008.
Soon after the Lok Sabha assembled at 6.00 p.m., the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Ms Sushma Swaraj, sought a statement (from the Prime Minister) on the WikiLeaks matter published in The Hindu newspaper. With no response from the Treasury Benches, the Opposition staged a walkout.
Indications are that Lok Sabha would take up the Finance Bill 2011 for discussion on March 22 and the same Bill (after amendments are moved) for passage on March 24. Budget session of Parliament is expected to end on March 25 in view of the elections in five States and a Union Territory.
