The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has sanctioned the proposal to set up new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) in Assam, Tripura and Rajasthan.
These are part of 20 new self-sustaining, research-led IIITs that will be established under public-private-partnership model, a Ministry release said here on Monday.
The new IIITs would be set up by the Ministry in collaboration with the States and industry participants, the release said.
Each of the new establishment is likely to be set up at a cost of Rs 128 crore, of which 50 per cent could be contributed by the Central Government, 35 per cent by the State Government and 15 per cent by the industry.
However, for the North-Eastern States, industry participation would be kept at 7.5 per cent, while the Centre would provide 57.5 per cent of the expenditure.
Further, the respective State Governments would also provide 50-100 acres of land for the institutes. So far, 17 States have identified land for this purpose, while 11 States are in the process of identifying their industry allies, the release added.
The project, which is targeted to be completed in a phased manner, also earmarks Rs 50 crore for faculty development programmes. The proposals for setting up IIITs by three more States are likely to be approved soon.
