The Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate Mobile Number Portability services across the country on Thursday evening. The facility allows mobile users to change their operator without having to change the phone number.

MNP was first introduced in Haryana last month where, at least, one lakh subscribers have availed themselves of the service.

Mobile operators are gearing up for the introduction of the service, which is expected to increase competition. While Idea Cellular and Vodafone have already started airing advertising campaigns luring subscribers by promising better network coverage, others such as Uninor are betting on its dynamic pricing to act as the differentiator. However, most operators and analysts reckon that MNP will not be a game changer in the long run. “Our research suggests that MNP will not be a game changer. MNP will definitely have higher relevance in the post-paid segment since these number-loyal subscribers haven't yet had free choice on worries of losing their number identity,” said Mr Rajiv Bawa, Executive Vice-President, Uninor.

For porting, a subscriber has to send an SMS (PORT<space>Mobile Number) from the number he wishes to be ported, to number 1900.
