Vodafone CEO Martin Pieters believes that there is an urgent need to release more spectrum.
Addressing delegates at the CeBIT India conference, Pieters emphasised the need for spectrum at a time when the government has plans to have 600 million broadband users by 2020.
"No way it is possible unless spectrum is released. Already the quality of services is getting impacted due to shortage of spectrum," he added.
The problem is not confined to Vodafone and others are also facing similar constraints, according to industry watchers.
Pieters is hopeful that the new government will address these issues. "In the past, we had written to the government but did not get any response," he said.
The company gets 50 per cent of its revenues from data and this growth needs more spectrum, according to analysts.
