For those who had gathered at the Amethyst in Chennai on Saturday for the Mi4 event, there was one surprise waiting for them. It was Hugo Barra.

With Xiaomi launching the phone a few days ago officially, the curiosity value was not much. Those present were just hoping to get a hand at the phone. But when Hugo Barra, Vice President, International, Xiaomi, took the ‘stage’ (if you can call it one), there were many among the gathering who were pleasantly surprised to see him there.

Chennai has never been ‘the’ place for phone launches. The Mi4 launch was one of the few lucky events for the city.

Hugo Barra’s presentation too underscored the importance of India for Xiaomi with India-based themes like Thalivaa featuring an animated Rajinikant.

The event started with Hugo Barra showcasing the new features of the MIUI 6 and then moving on to the main event - the launch of Mi4. As with all Mi phones, the Mi4 is available only on Flipkart now (Mi will have its own store soon). Mi4 will be open for sale on Flipkart on February 10 for those who register. The device has been priced at ₹19,999.

The Mi4 comes with a Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB LPDDR3 RAM (that is not available even in high-end phones), 16GB memory, 5 inch IPS Full HD 441 PPI Gorilla Glass screen, 13MP rear camera, and 8MP front camera.

Hugo Barra also emphasised on the point that the phone came with a 3080mAh lithium-ion battery.
