BigBasket.com, an online grocery retailer, has launched its operation in Chennai.

Hari Menon, Co-founder and CEO, said customers can shop online for fresh fruits, vegetables, grocery and the entire range of products and have them delivered at their doorstep.

The online grocer has expanded to the fifth city with the entry into Chennai. It now has operations in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune.

BigBasket now handles over 8,000 orders a day at peak period and by April expects this to grow to over 12,000 on a peak day.

Menon said the company is also looking at offering value added products such as cut vegetables and ready-to-cook mixes.

The online grocer sources produce directly from farmers. It will set up 75-100 buying centres across various locations and establish a central warehouse.

It plans to expand into NCR and Delhi this year. It has raised funding of $60 million and has a customer base of about 4.50 lakh.
