Quality turmeric continued to command good price, while average quality ones met with lukewarm response in Erode markets on Thursday.

“Local traders are buying Salem hybrid, Erode hybrid and Erode sanna (thin) variety turmeric. For the quality turmeric they have quoted higher price. Of the 3,800 bags that arrived, 60 per cent was sold. Stockists have procured 10 per cent,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Usually the price of turmeric is high in this season, but this year due to poor upcountry demand, prices have not gained. On Thursday, all 198 bags of Salem hybrid finger and root varieties were sold, but traders quoted lower price; and both varieties were sold ₹100 a quintal lower than Wednesday. At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger variety was sold at ₹4,119-6,277 a quintal, root variety ₹4,01-6,100.

Salem Hybrid: The finger turmeric fetched ₹6,041-7,479. The root variety ruled at ₹5,709-6,306. Of the 898 bags put up for sale, 167 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,499 to ₹6,320, the root variety ₹5,377-6,096. Some 477 bags of turmeric were sold against 479 on offer.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,491 to ₹6,388, the root variety ₹5,039 to ₹ 6,189. About 910 bags were sold against 947 that arrived.

At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,600-6,439 a quintal, the root variety ₹5,243-6,243. Of 228 bags placed for sale, 226 found takers.
