Spot turmeric dropped by Rs 200 a quintal more in Erode on Tuesday, following decline in markets in other States.

However, Mr R.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association said prices rose by Rs 500 a quintal at the regulated market as arrivals remained poor and sales increased.

He said, “The prices are decreasing fast in other markets in Sangli and Nizamabad. Turmeric futures has also had a poor run. All these are reflecting in Erode. Negligible quantity was bought. On Tuesday, only 25 to 30 per cent of the the arrivals was sold. Local demand has also dipped.”

Farmers said they were bringing limited stocks to the market now because of declining prices. They expect an upswing in prices in August.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger variety was sold at Rs 5,639-7239 a quintal and the root variety at Rs 5,266-6,366.

Salem Crop: The finger variety fetched Rs 6,499-8,439 and the root variety Rs 6,296-6,650. Out of the 1,485 bags that arrived, 200 were sold.

At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 5,627-7,419 and the root variety at Rs 5,367-6,439. All the 60 bags that arrived were sold.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 5,859-7,499 and the root variety at Rs 5,630-6,389. Out of the 600 bags that arrived, 542 were sold.

At the Regulated Marketing Committee, the finger variety was sold at Rs 6,788-7,699 and the root variety at Rs 6,190-6,469. All the 266 bags that arrived were sold.
